7-7-77, 1st Demo Session
Produced By Pat Garrett and recorded on a TEAC 2340 4-track.

1. Anything
2. Mater Dolores
3. Punish or be Damned
4. Magazine Love
5. Peer Pressure

History: Played on Rodney Bigenheimer's show on LA's KROQ in 1977, also played on KSAN in December 1977.

Available: This entire session survives in various forms. Any recording that says "Demos 77" or "Demos 78" might have a few, if not all, of the tracks. On vinyl, the first three tracks appeared on "Demos 77 Volume 1," a 7" put out by Stomachache and the last three appeared on "Scuzzy The Death Cone Clown '78 Demos," a 2x7" put out by Death Cone Records.

Identify: People can identify this recording through its heavy use of drum machines, particularly during a passage of "Mater Dolores". "Anything" starts out with "If I can't have..." instead of "I get so sick..." which was added later. "Punish or Be Damned" starts out with a drum machine intro. "Magazine Love" starts off with what sounds like echoed rimshots. "Peer Pressure" starts off what a foghorn type sound and features echoed vocals.

(?)7-28/29-77, San Francisco

Magazine Love
Peer Pressure
Punish Or Be Damned

History: If the designation "San Francisco 1977" is correct, it is from 7-28/29-77, Mabuhay Gardens. David Brown plays piano on this recording. "Punish Or Be Damned" seems to be from a different recording.

Available: It is available from tape traders, as "SF 77" or something similar.

Identify: Before Magazine love, Tomata says "Hiya, we're the Screamers (scream), and uh, the next selection is you don't love me, you love magazines."

??-??-??, an "audiophile workshop" two track demo
The Screamers played a set live to a two track deck. KK Barrett has a low opinion of this session.

Nothing else is known right now.

Peer Pressure
I'm Going Steady With Twiggy

History: First show featuring Jeff McGregor on piano.

Available: There are two recordings of this show known to exist. The first is an incomplete audio recording (missing "Violent World" and a small bit of "Twiggy"). From this, songs 2,3,5 and 6 ended up on the "Masque Dec 78" EP. The second is a film (18 minutes, black and white), recorded by a UCLA student for inclusion on the documentary "Never mind the Sex Pistols--here's the Bollocks." "I'm Going Steady With Twiggy" ended up on the film, while it and the rest of the footage ended up on a bootleg tape called "Live 77-79".

Identify: Before Vertigo, Tomata says "Fear is such a wonderful thing. Some of you have tasted fear; didn't you find it delicious? This next song is about fear. Gorilla Rose wrote the words."

Early 78, LA

Magazine Love
Peer Pressure
Punish Or Be Damned

Available: This show fragment is part of the "One Year Live And Demos" CDR.

History: Unknown, but probably early 1978, LA.

Identify: Tomata uses the same "I saw your face in a magazine, and I hope we never meet. (Audience response: "Fuck You" and "ha ha") You don't love me, you love magazines!" He used the same line in both 1-6-78 Whisky and 1-7-78 Whisky, so this might be from 1-5-78 Whisky?

My friends Helen and Trudie and Tommy and Trixie don't have anywhere to go anymore! I know that you're making a lot of money on those country western albums, so why don't you give it to the Masque?
